If you’re heading to Florida’s west coast for a Tampa trade show, you’re in for a treat. A beautiful city drenched in sunshine much of the year awaits you anytime you can get a break from the show floor. So if you have a half-hour lunch break or a few hours away from the exhibition, there are plenty of ways to catch some rays. And if you’re not a sun soaker or the weather isn’t cooperating, Tampa also boasts some great indoor activities and attractions.

Sunny Spots at the Tampa Convention Center

The Tampa Convention Center sits on the water and offers stunning views of the city. If you’re only able to escape the show floor for a quick meal break, head to the Riverwalk Patio on the bayside of the venue for some fresh air. When you have a little more extra time, treat yourself to even more of the Tampa Riverwalk, which extends over 2.5 miles along the Hillsborough River.

Or, grab a bite—or a post-show cocktail—at The Sail. This outdoor hotspot features fresh seafood and a long list of refreshing drinks. There’s also live music every week, so you might just get to enjoy a local band while you’re relaxing.

Outdoor Activities a Short Drive Away from Your Tampa Trade Show

Tampa has so much to offer, especially for visitors who can get a little more time away from their Tampa trade show for a few hours—or better yet, a whole day. There are plenty of ways to soak up the sun, and many of them are about a 30-minute drive (or less!) from the Tampa Convention Center. Here are a few can’t-miss things to do.

Explore a State Park

Hike, bike, kayak, fish, picnic, or just relax in nearby Hillsborough River State Park. From the Wetlands Trail to the river’s Class II rapids, this park has been delighting visitors since its establishment in the 1930s. There’s even an opportunity to learn about some local history at the Fort Foster historic site.

Meet the Local Manatees

About 16 miles south of the Tampa Convention Center stands the TECO Manatee Viewing Center. In addition to coming face-to-face with these aquatic behemoths (manatees can grow to over ten feet long and weigh well over 1,000 pounds), you can also experience the Rays Touch Tank and stroll down the 900-foot walkway called the Tidal Walk, which is part of the Great Florida Birding Trail. This free attraction is usually open every day between November and mid-April.

Walk Among the Chickens

Head a couple of miles northeast from the main Tampa trade show venue to the historical and culturally vibrant Ybor City. Also nicknamed the Cigar Capital of the World, this area boasts the oldest restaurant in Florida (Columbia Restaurant, which opened in 1905). It’s full of personality—and chickens, thanks to a Tampa ordinance protecting them. The birds stroll the streets and tend to gather by the local trolley stop.

Have a Zoo Day

Take a 20-minute drive from the convention center and you’ll arrive at ZooTampa at Lowry Park. With a healthy mix of outdoor habitats and indoor exhibits, you’ll be able to soak up the sun and take an inside reprieve throughout your visit. Some of the animals you’ll see are local, and others are exotic—but they’re all stunning.

Relax on a White Sand Beach

Tampa and the surrounding area are peppered with the breathtaking beaches. Although some of the most popular ones are closer to an hour-long drive from the Tampa Convention Center, there are plenty of nearby ones. Davis Island Beach, MacDill Beach, and East Tampa Beach are less than 30 minutes away.

Bonus Attractions: Indoor Hotspots

Maybe you want a break from the sun, or maybe your free time away from your Tampa trade show falls on a rainy day. Never fear! The city has all sorts of indoor attractions and activities for you to enjoy. Here are a few ideas:

  • Discover more than 8,000 species in a huge variety of awe-striking habitats at the Florida Aquarium.
  • Stop by the Henry B. Plant Museum to learn about Tampa’s history and culture. The museum is housed in a National Historic Landmark that’s been standing since the 1890s.
  • For an even more in-depth look at Florida’s past, head to the Tampa Bay History Center to learn about the immigrants, conquistadors, and pirates that shaped the city.
  • Sip on a hand-crafted beer and nosh on some local fare at Cigar City Brewing, a local favorite since 2009.

With so much to offer to its trade show exhibitors, attendees, and general visitors, it’s no wonder why Tampa, FL is such a popular destination. While you’re out enjoying the sites and attractions, we'll make sure things are running smoothly at your Tampa trade show.
